I think that the best advertising I have ever had was through 'word of mouth' not the easiest when you are starting out, but after a few clients referrals work well, so always work to your best potential on every project, you never know who's hands it might fall into...

Yes, I agree with you that a friend or highly respected colleagues recommendation is a great way to start a new busienss relationship. However, it will not be a regular way of growing the business and it's a hard boundary to cross to ask a client to be pro-active in their recommendations of your service. Likewise if you throw testimonials in a prospects face do you think they become less valuable?

I completely agree it isn't the easiest way to build up a company, and clients recommending you isn't easy for them either, unless it pops up in conversation, or they are discussing it with friends. I guess the best referrals are the 'designed by' at the bottom of the page, but if somebody likes the site would they necessarily click the link to find out the designer?

Advertising is a tricky thing. But I also think the best way is through the internet, also by reputation. Perhaps you can try targeting potential clients with teaser mailers or samples. For example your company is Tiga - could you send out something in the mail to get their attention, like a bottle of Tiger beer? A tigger? Just suggestions, but that way it is something a bit different, a bit quirky that they will remember you by. Maybe give it a few days and follow it with another teaser or even a phone call? People like getting teasers and you'll know yourself when something comes through the door that is different - you'll remember it!

The internet can be powerful but I wouldn't base your full growth or marketing strategy on it. Its not so difficult to get leads from the internet but to get strong leads can be. My experience has shown a mixture of word of mouth/internet/PR and lots of networking has helped us to build our business.

Think that has just hit the nail right on the head, use a mixture (had to get some cooking pun in...) of all opportunities and services available to you, and network... While also building up your portfolio and client base.

Referrals is definitely the best form of gaining more business, someone is much more likely to choose you if they know you or their friend knows you etc. Advertising can be costly in magazines but the best form of advertising is pay per click, google adwords. Ok, it can be expensive but you can specify a daily budget and choose the right keywords that relate to your business. The best thing about this is that it's easily measurable, you can test and test until you get your campaign right unlike print advertising where it can be guesswork. If you don't have much money try online PR and get your name out there.
